Winter Solstice tells an eight-hour story with ambient music. The programme is in its fifth edition and is a collaboration between four different programme makers.
Harrold Roeland, one of the 4 compilers, says: “Slowly but surely, the ambient night is becoming a tradition. Slowly but surely there is a growing feeling that December would not feel complete without it.”
Every year Roeland travels through Christmas-lit Netherlands on the last train to the Concertzender studio. He spends the night there and directs the entire eight hours. He describes it as ‘camping and forgetting about time’. And sees it as a privilege, inextricably linked to the end of the year.
