Programme maker Hieke van Hoogdalem looks at the development and use of wind instruments from the Middle Ages to the Classical period.
Music for wind instruments has been made since prehistory, but the function of the musicians, their music and their instruments has changed over time. This series explains these changes.
The first programme is on 16 September 2013, includes music for various wind instruments and explains the difference between the musette (pictured) and the bagpipe.
Part 2 is broadcast on Monday 7 October 2013, and focusses on the cornetto and the trumpet.
Part 3 on Monday 4 November 2013 concerns the chalumeau and the Baroque clarinet.
