Radio Romantica

mon 5 apr 2021 12:00 hour
Composer: Joseph Rheinberger

Joseph Rheinberger

In the second half of the 19th century, Joseph Rheinberger was the absolute pope of music in Germany. For forty years, he was the celebrated and feared professor of composition at Munich’s leading conservatory. He knew everyone and interfered in everything. His compositions were sung and played by every choir and organist in the country. Until the 21st century, his masses and motets were an essential part of German choirs’ repertoire. In the Netherlands, this music has yet to land. Perhaps Radio Romantica can make a small contribution to that. You will now hear the famous and incredibly beautiful Cantus Missae, Rheinberger’s ultimate mass for a cappella choirs. Furthermore, this programme features a few organ works and three motets, plus the Requiem, his swan song in D minor. It is a clear reference to Mozart, and he also completed it close to his death.
