1995: the year we started broadcasting jazz. North Sea Jazz.
We can’t imagine not including jazz in our programs now, but it hasn’t always been that way. The first ten years we mainly focused completely on western classical music.
But in the 90s we broadened our horizon. In 1995, we suddenly found ourselves at the pinnacle of jazz in the Netherlands: the, then Hague-based, mega event North Sea Jazz!
Today we will broadcasts two concerts by two greats. First up: Dianna Reeves. While others cautiously avoid the major standards, fearing they might sound too ordinary, she embraces them wholeheartedly, adding her own unique twist to each.
Then, a group of six young men. They only just gratuated from the conservatory in Hilversum and already turned the Dutch jazz scene upside down. They call themselves: the Michiel Borstlap Sextet. Do you know him? You might! We’re also familiar with him and his saxophonist Yuri Honing and his trumpeter Eric Vloeimans. These men really don’t need an introduction. In 2024, these men are the not-so-gray eminences of our national jazz scene, reigning at the top for the past thirty years!
