“To hell with historical necessity!” is a motto that Englishman Robin Holloway adopted, embracing a conservative approach that embraces romanticism. This was despite the comments from the Italian master, Luigi Nono, who told Holloway, then a seventeen-year-old, “You are gifted, but what you write is historically impossible.”
