Today, Folk It! is entirely dedicated to Yann-Fanch Kemener whose CD ‘Dans!’ has been recently released. Kenemer is one of the most well known performers of Breton traditional songs called ‘Kan ha Diskan’. This means as much as ‘call and response’ and it is common in vocal as well as instrumental music from Brittany. Vocal pieces are often performed by two ore more vocalists (usually men) and have two parts: the kaner and the diskaner. Each takes care of half of the ‘Kan ha Diskan’. Pieces in this tradition may last up to 20 minutes and are mostly performed during a ‘fest noz’, nighttime dancing parties which are still regularly held in many places in Brittany.
Kemener was born in Brittany in 1957 and has made many recordings since the late 1970s. He performs a lot and also teaches Breton traditional singing. This programme gives an overview of all kinds of music, everything between a cappella, baroque and sound collages with the Czech Ba.fnu.
