Folk magazine about the present and the past, from freak folk to minstrels. Folk music from Estonia.
Like the other countries in the Baltic region, Estonia has a rich folk tradition and several musicians implementing it in their unique ways. Fortunately, this music is reasonably well available outside of Estonia’s borders, for example at the German record label Nordic Notes. In this episode of Folk It! we’ll focus on three of these musicians who have made quite a name for themselves in the rest of Europe as well.
Tuulikki Bartosik is probably one of the most well-known Estonian musicians and one of today’s most prominent accordion players. The storytelling aspect of Southern Estonian musical tradition has a strong presence in her music.
Mari Kalkun composes most of her songs, inspired by traditional music from the south of Estonia. She also lets nature play an essential part in her compositions. She went to the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, where she studied traditional singing. Nowadays, she performs with the Finnish ensemble Runorum. She recorded her most recent publication in April and May of 2020. The CD is a limited edition, since it has dried plants from her garden in its case.
Ramo Teder and Marko Veisson form the duo Puuluup. Both of them sing and play the talharpa, which is a small, traditional harp from Estonia. They add all kinds of other instruments and electronics to their songs inspired by musical traditions from Estonia and far beyond that.
