Nordic Sounds. In the third episode of the Folkit! programme Nordic Sounds we stay on the Faeröer.
There is actually quite a lot of variation. We begin with a singer who actually sings in English on his debut album. Even though Hans Adrias isn’t as productive, his songs are still breath takingly beautiful. Lighthearted yet beautifully arranged with a nod to Americana and still carrying the mystique of Scandinavian folk. The music of Hamradun cannot be called light-hearted. Is it a metal band, a folk band…or should we stick to a metal-folk band? Fact of the matter is that strings are pulled and keyboards and skins are beaten. But the untitled album also features long, historic and cleverly crafted ballads and even a real religious melody, in addition to its own compositions and adaptations of poems by well-known Faroese poets. It sounds even more theatrical with Budam, which is synonymous with singer-songwriter, theatre composer and actor Bui Egason Dam, along with his musical partners in crime Magnus and Rogvi. Tom Waits shakes hands with Nick Cave in a meeting with Ennio Morricone and Jim Morrison chips in on intensity. World music cabaret with absurdist and surrealist touches. And all of that can be found in Faroese….
