Folk it Mediterranee focusses on the musical richness of the Mediterranean.
Frenchman Thierry Robin created a masterpiece with his album Gitans. He was born in Rochefort-sur-Loire in 1957, and from a young age played guitar with former musicians of minority groups. He developed his own style, strongly inspired by Manouche- Roma- and Sinti musicians. He was introduced to Gypsy music from around the Mediterranean Sea (Spain, South of France) but also from the Balkans. And later, the origin of all Gypsy music: the source of the Roma and Sinti in Rajasthan (India). But Robin also played music with Arabic musicians, mostly Berbers, Algerians and Moroccans. He made his first record in 1986, as part of a duo with Hameed Khan, an Indian tabla player from Jaipur. He also started collaborating with Breton singer Erik Marchand. In 1993, a CD of Trio Erik Marchand was released as a project initiated by Robin himself. Gitans is a masterpiece in which he pays homage to Romani music, inspired by the source of the music (Rajasthan in India), through the Balkans, and down to southern Spain with flamenco from Andalusia. He gathered the best musicians in this field, such as then-unknown singer Gulabi Sapera from Rajasthan, the Saadna brothers, Paco el Lobo, François Castiello (accordion), and Hameed Khan (tabla). Gitans became a worldwide success, and the ensemble toured their repertoire for years. Robin composed most of the melodies himself, drawing inspiration from the original sources but never copying them. His unique ability to connect with other musicians inspired them to explore boundaries (of collaboration), often adding interesting and innovative elements to the familiar pattern. Robin is increasingly spreading his wings across the entire Mediterranean region, embracing the southern European, North African, and Eastern European sides. Arabic influences—such as rhythms, sound structures, and instruments like the oud and percussion—merge with Balkan tones and southern European sounds. A striking example of this is his project ‘River Banks.’ This consists of three originally separate CDs where he gives Indian, Moroccan, and Turkish influences a unique twist by collaborating with local musicians. A selection of these projects by this versatile, inspiring musician is the focus of this edition of Folk it Mediterranee.
