The film Jalsaghar is an Indian film by Satyajit Ray from 1958. About the soundtrack, Satyajit Ray says: "After the disappointing success of my second film, Aparajito, I was rather unsure about what kind of film to make after that. After careful consideration, I decided to make a film with singing and dancing, a formula that is usually received quite well by Indian audiences. I chose a short popular story – Jalsaghar – about the final days of a music-loving feudal landowner. However, the scenario developed into a serious study on the fall of feudalism. The singing and dancing remained, but became classical instead of pop. I was lucky to have some of the best singers and instrumentalists for this film. I chose the greatest sitar virtuoso Vilayat Kahn for the composer, who was assisted very well by his younger brother Imrat Khan, another sitar virtuoso. The two musicians made beautiful solos and duets for the background music for which, with the exception of violins, only Indian instruments were used. A lot of music was made for the foreground as well, but we always attempt to intertwine that with the story."
