¡Mambo!

sat 27 apr 2024 14:00 hour

In today’s episode of Mambo we will highlight Cuban music and dance grenre ‘guaracha’.

In the 17th century, the original form of this genre was brought to Spain by Spanish colonists from Mexico. Later, the ‘guaracha’ found its way back to Cuba. In the 19th century, this genre evolved from a type of folk dance into lively and fast-paced dance music, often performed in brothels and typically played by small group

Over time, ‘guaracha’ became most closely associated with ‘son’ from the big cities, though the lyrics were often a bit more spicy.

This hour, this exotic dance genre is performed by musicians from Cuba, Puerto Rica, and New York, including Tito Puente, Johnny Pacheco, and Eddie Palmieri’s (pictured) famous orchestra. We will also hear two songs by the most famous singer in the Latino world, Celia Cruz.
