Jazz Arabian style, part 1. In this first part dedicated to various Arabian artists that combine jazz with elements from Arabian music (or the other way around!) you will hear music by Ziad Rahbani from Lebanon and by Fat’hy Salama fom Egypt.
Ziad Rahbani is the son of the legendary Lebanese singer Fairouz and her husband and writer/composer Assi Rahbani. Ziad Rahbani was born on 1 January 1956 in Beirut and studied oriental and classical western music. Ziad started his professional musical career at the age of 17. In the mid-70s, he started experimenting with jazz on his album Kyrie Eleisen and in his stage play Bel-Nesba La Bokra. He also made several jazz-coloured albums for his mother Fairouz.

Fat’hy Salama was born on 13 February 1954 in the well-known working class area Shubra in Cairo, Egypt. He started playing the piano when he was six and played in clubs from his teens. Later he studied jazz in the US and played together with artists like Barry Harris, Hal Galper, Malik Osman, Pat Patrick and Sun Râ. In the early 80s, Salama worked together with drummer Yehya Khalil, and guitarist Aziz El-Nasser in the popular band of singer Mohamed Mounir. Since the end of the 80s, Fathy has his own band who frequently play live in Egypt, France and several other places. In 2004, Fathy arranged the album Allah, Egypt by Youssou N’Dour.
