Missa etcetera

thu 2 feb 2023 22:00 hour

Religious music from different centuries. In this broadcast, Vesper psalms by two Italian composers from the 18th century can be heard: Giovanni Filippo Maria Dreyer and Niccolò Jommelli.

The first composer is hardly known: Giovanni Filippo Maria Dreyer, born into a family with German roots, was initially mainly active in opera as a singer (castrato) and as a composer. He worked in Breslau (now Wroclaw) and St. Petersburg. After returning to his birthplace Florence, he entered a monastery where he was appointed chapel master after a few years.

Niccolò Jommelli also worked as a composer of operas. He spent a significant part of his life in Stuttgart. He has left behind a considerable amount of sacred music, but it is hardly known.
