There, inspiration followed naturally. That’s how the Ukrainian folk tune sung by Alexandra’s staff found its way into the second symphony, along with a few other melodies from that region. The symphony earned the nickname Little Russian, which Ukraine was referred to for centuries. But let’s set that aside for now. This programme kicks off with the glorious fantasy overture to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, featuring beautiful themes that everyone can hum along to.
