Tchaikovsky wasn’t one to easily find contentment, prone to gloom. When he struggled to balance his duties at the Moscow Conservatory with his composing, his sister Alexandra Davidova took him away to their lovely family estate in Kamenka, Ukraine.

There, inspiration followed naturally. That’s how the Ukrainian folk tune sung by Alexandra’s staff found its way into the second symphony, along with a few other melodies from that region. The symphony earned the nickname Little Russian, which Ukraine was referred to for centuries. But let’s set that aside for now. This programme kicks off with the glorious fantasy overture to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, featuring beautiful themes that everyone can hum along to.

Programme details:

  • Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky – Fantasy Overture to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet

Kirov Orchestra conducted by Valeri Gergiev

  • Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky – Symphony no.2 in c minor, op.17 Little Russian

Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mariss Jansons
