A whole night of world music, compiled by Benno Wormgoor: Finding Flamenco
Flamenco has three forms: dance, song and guitar. The artists strive to reach ‘duende’, a sort of ectasy, that drags its audiences along. For most Spaniards, the best flamenco singer is without a doubt Camarón de la Isla (1950-1992). He was accompanied by guitar legends such as Paco de Lucia, and later on, Tomatito. From the second half of the twentieth century on, flamenco has often been at the core of experiments with different musical styles. Ketama, Paco de Lucia and Ojos de Brujo all were able to add new dimension to traditional music. In Barcelona, a simpler variety came to be: the rumba Catalana. This genre was made world famous by the Gipsy Kings.
