In Spain, the art of the string quartet was dominated by Boccherini who, despite several Spanish coloured works, still was an Italian and who applied the Central-European quartet style with the same ease as the Spanish couleur locale. Manuel Canales was overshadowed by Boccherini for a long time, even though he composed some highly original quartets that have been rediscovered only recently. Antonio Rosetti, also known under his real name Frantisek Antonin Rössler, befell the same fate, but he was overshadowed by Haydn and Pleyel.
