Thou singest ye carol

In this show, you will listen to the continuation of Faust (the previous part was on 22 May). Originally a 16th century legend. Faust is a legendary figure, based on the German magician and physician Johann Faust. Right after his death, probably around 1540, a rumour arose that he had made a pact with the devil.

The legend inspired many writers, but the most famous was the ‘Faust’ by the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He published it in verse form in four parts, first a primal Faust, then a fragment and finally in 1808 part 1 appeared. That part, the second appeared in 1832, is the guideline for this programme. Goethe in turn inspired composers and so you will hear music by Röntgen, Schumann, Schubert, Wagner, Fanny Hensel and Randy Newman, almost classical too.
