Alto saxophone player Jimmy Woods (part 1).
In 1961 Jimmy Woods made a flying start as member of the quintet of trumpet player Joe Gordon with the album Lookin’ Good (Contemporary). One year later he made his debut as his own boss with Awakening! followed by Conflict in 1963. Both these Contemporary albums were received jubilantly by critics. He also performed at a few Gerald Wilson Big Band sessions and afterwards no one has ever heard of him again. Although you won’t stumble across his name in reference works, fortunately his entire small oeuvre can be heard on CD .
