Trumpet player Blue Mitchell (1930-1979) started off in the rhythm & blues circuit at Earl Bostic among others. Next he was asked by alto saxophone player Cannonball Adderley for an album on Riverside. Between 1958 and 1964 he was part of the quintet of piano player Horace Silver. Next he had his own quintet which included saxophone player Junior Cook and piano player Chick Corea.

In 1958 he got to work with piano player Theolonious Monk, the inscrutable ‘high priest of jazz’. Next he formed a sensational tenor tandem with daredevil saxophone player Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis.

Tenor saxophone player Johnny Griffin (1928-2008) part 2. From 1954 he started to operate with his own bands in and around Chicago. He also played regularly with the whimsical piano player Thelonious Monk. In 1956 he released his first album under his own name. Next he would release more than a dozen albums for Riverside and Blue Note until 1962.

Tenor saxophone player Johnny Griffin died on 25 July 2008 at the age of 80. His nicknames were The Little Giant and The Fastest Gun in the West. In 1946 he started out in Lionel Hampton’s bigband, where he met trumpet player Joe Morris. In 1947 he performed in Morris’ rhythm & blues band. (part 1)
