Programme of episode 58: Overtone singing in Tuva and surroundings
A broadcast about overtone singing on the occasion of the publishing of the Tuva recordings of Maxim Chapochnikov on soundreporters.bandcom.com. Overtone singing is the latest big music discovery. It is a vocal technique which allows people to produce more than one tone at once, and outside the Altai mountains it was unknown until the 1970s, when the first recordings were released internationally. It was done under the name of Jew’s harp songs, because that was seen as the origin and because of the association with shamanism. The authorities even tried to deny and forbid this kind of music because of the association with shamanism. The people attributed this music to sounds from nature, and used it for singing lullabies and telling stories. Also shamans, who were part of daily life, used it, but it was not used exclusively by them. Since the 1970s, overtone singing has spread all over the world; surely you can do a course in overtone singing nearby. In this episode of The Source of Sound you can hear some old recordings, examples of overtone singing from Mongolia, Bashkirostan and Gorno Altai by famous musicians from Tuva such as Huun-Huur-Tu, and the special recordings of Maxim Chapochnikov.
