Programmes on Sunday 7 August and Monday 15 August look at two of the composers who are featured in this year’s Festival of Early Music in Utrecht: Adriaen Willaert and Johann Rosenmüller.
Festival of Early Music 2016 part 1: Adriaen Willaert
Adriaen Willaert had a successful career as the maestro di cappella of St Mark’s in Venice and was the founder of the Venetian School. The Venetian School established Venice as a breeding ground for musical innovation.

Festival of Early Music 2016 part 2: Johann Rosenmüller
The double choir was the most remarkable aspect of the music of the Venetian School and fascinated both musicians and composers. Many travelled from all over Europe to Venice. One of them was the German Johann Rosenmüller. In 1658 he also was appointed the maestro di cappella of St Mark’s, a position he would hold for 25 years.
